What is operating system?

                    An operating system is a software program which acts as a intermediate between the computer and the user.

 

What is purpose of the Operating System?

                    The operating system provide an environment which the user an execute program in a convenient and efficient manner  (or it is the main facilitator between  the operating system)

 

What are the task the operating system must do when the computer is booting?

· When you switch on the computer bios chip (ROM) program start to run and its verify the hardware connected to the computer.

· Some operating system booting up files are being copied to RAM from the hard disk.

· That booting up files get information from the bios chip (ROM chip) and boot the computer and deliver the information to execute system program.

How to classify operating system?

· Multi User

· Multi Processing

What is multi user operating system?

          Allows 2 or more uses to run the program at the same time. Some operating system permit 100 or 1000 of parallel users.

 

What is multi processing operating system?

          Supports running a program more than one CPU.

 

What is multi tasking operating system?

          Allows more than one program to run concurrently.

 

What is multi threading operating system?

          Allows different parts of the single program to run concurrently (at the same time).

 

Nowadays disk operating system is not widely used explain why?

          Because nowadays all the operating systems are GUI but DOS is CLI and people must be aware of the commands . So it is no longer in use . But GUI has a window icon menu pointer so they can access the operating system.

 

What does the following stand for?

· GUI - Graphical User Interface .

· DOS - Disk Operating System .

· USB - Universal Serial Bus .

 

List 4 different task that an operating system can perform.

· It sends the outputs on the screen.

· Recognizing input from the input devices from keyboard and mouse.

· Keep track of files and directories on the disk.

· Controlling peripheral devices such as disk drivers and printers

What is the difference between windows 95 and windows XP.

Windows XP supports serial bus but windows 95 does not .Windows XP faster shut down and faster start up than windows 95.Windows  XP has web T.V. and DVD facilities but windows 95 does not have..
